LIVABILITY STUDIES

Livability studies are the District Department of Transportation's system-wide approach to traffic safety and transportation improvements for several neighborhoods. The studies seek solutions that do not shift problems to other blocks or intersections. Each liability study concludes with a list of recommendations that can be implemented within a 6-8 year period.

Livability studies should be a community-driven process. During the data collection phase, we spend time combing documents, websites, blogs, and emails to find previous public comments and concerns within the study area. We marry that is transportation data such as crashes, traffic volumes, and level of traffic stress to identify roads and intersections that need special attention. Working through a robust outreach approach, we deliver final recommendations which include safer crossings, geometric adjustments, and infrastructure for people biking.

As the prime contractor, Nspiregreen led a consultant team to develop the livability study. At the completion of the project, the two Advisory Neighborhood Commissions passed resolutions supporting the final recommendations.

As the Project Director for the study, we shared project organization and management roles with Nelson Nygaard, the prime contractor. This meant participating in all aspects of the project.
